bullet  Marriage Notes:

Uncles Walden's house [by Diane Peery Barkey].
He lived in Posey, Ca. in a little place called Jack Ranch. It had a hotel, little store, a bar probably, and they rented out little cabins. Uncle Walden and Aunt Renie (Irene) rented one of cabins. Before I was around they had lived in California Hot Springs and various other places. At Jack Ranch Aunt Renie taught in a one room school house, kindergarten through 8th grade. (I went there one winter in the fifth grade) Uncle Walden did his cattle business. Their cabin had one main room with the bed, dining table, desk, armoire and wood stove. The little kitchen was only about 10X10 and had a table, big wood stove, shelves and a little cupboard door that opened to their food cooler outside. The water came in through a pipe, directly from the stream! Aunt Renie could make the most wonderful applesauce cake in that oven. Then there was a little addition off the main room called the "dog house". It was used as storage and had a twin bed in it. I spent many nights in that bed listening to the stream going by. The outhouse was up the hill. It was not until I was in later high school that electricity finally came. Aunt Renie got a refrigerator and put it on the front porch. I find their life fascinating because it was such a different way of life from that which the rest of us were living. I don't know if she was happy with her life (she graduated from Pomona) but I never heard her complain.
