Herbert said his mother Bertha was born in Chicago, as was his father, Mandel Albert Abrams. Albert died in Artesia and Bertha died in a home in Pomona or Duarte. Herbert was on his second period of service in the Army and was stationed in Texas when his mother died. Lester’s wife Martha wrote a letter to the Red Cross while Herbert was in Korea saying his mother was dying, so the Army gave him emergency leave. Herbert said she was not dying, Bertha was then living with Isabel and Lawrence and Bertha said they were just not taking care of her. He moved her to a hotel and later she moved into a home in Pomona or Duarte where she evenually did die.
However, there is a Bertha Mandel listed in the California Death Index for 1950-1959. She died on 14 May 1956 in San Bernardino, California, local file #846, state file #56-51843.
Bertha married Mandel Albert Abrams-[1177] [MRIN: 382], son of Casper Abrams-[1590] and Frances-[1591]. (Mandel Albert Abrams-[1177] was born in 1874 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, U.S.A. 5 6 7 and died on 13 Aug 1938 in , Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. 8.)
