He was born Herman Joseph Abrams and his name was changed to Herbert Murry Mandel when he was a child in Michigan (according to Herbert). His father started with some carts, selling thread, buttons and shoe laces. Later he had a store there. After that the family moved to Blytheville, Arkansas. His father had a store there with a partner. The partner got him into trouble with the law and his father was left with the rap for embezzlement and served some prison time.

bullet  Birth Notes:

He is now age 78. He confirmed that he was born 9 Nov 1917 in Big Rapids, Michigan. (telephone conversation 25 Sep 1996 with Herbert).

bullet  Death Notes:

Remington Dene Mandel called 28 Sep 1997 and told me Herbert had died. They found him at home and were told he had been dead a couple of days.

5. Military, From 1941 to 1946, New Guinea. 12 Herbert spent 26 years in the U.S. Army. He was in the Army from 1941 to 1946 and again from 1952 to 1973. He served in foreign countries of New Guinea during WW II, Korea, Viet Nam and Panama. When he was first in the Army he rose to the rank of 1st Sergeant in New Guinea in 1944.

6. Military, From 1952 to 1973, Korea, Viet Nam And Panama. 13 In 1952 he was a "PFC-1stSgt" and the Inspector-General thought that was inappropriate so he was promoted to 1st Sergeant again.

Herbert was on his second period of service in the Army and was stationed in Texas when his mother died. Lesterís wife Martha wrote a letter to the Red Cross while Herbert was in Korea saying his mother was dying, so the Army gave him emergency leave.

Herbert said the Army would not send him back to Korea after his emergency leave to see his dying mother, so they sent him to Texas. He was assigned to work with a Boy Scout Camp and then he volunteered to go to Viet Nam.

7. Name Change: Herbert Murry Mandel, Abt 1923. 14 Herbert thinks he began school as Herbert M. Mandel, but said his name at birth was Herman Joseph Abrams.
