Joseph Appleby-[1323] 1
Joseph APPELBY, age 52, may have been the father of John APPELBY, age 16 in 1851. John was in Joseph's household in 1851 but the relationship to Joseph was omitted. In 1861 the census no longer showed a John Appelby or Appleby, although it did list Joseph and his family that was still living with him. Joseph, who would have been age 71, does not appear in the 1871 census, nor does his wife who would have been age 68. It is uncertain at this time whether Joseph is properly in this line.
1. Census, 30 Mar 1851, Layer DE La Haye, Essex, England, United Kingdom. 1 The 1851 census spelled the name as APPELBY. The 1851 census for Layer de la Hay showed Joseph APPELBY as head, married, age 52, a farmer of 15 acres, with the entire family born in Layer de la Hay. His wife was Sarah, age 48. Son Henry was age 18 and unmarried, as was another boy named John Appelby (relation is omitted, possibly a son) unmarried, age 16. A daughter, Mary A, age 13, and another daughter, Susanah, age 11, three sons, Charles, age 9, George, age 7 and Alfred, age 3. Also in the household was Thomas Gentry, age 70, widower and father-in-law, listed as an agricultural labourer. 2. Census, 1861, Layer DE La Haye, Essex, England, United Kingdom. 3 In the 1861 census the name is spelled APPLEBY. It showed Joseph as head, age 61, farmer of 15 acres, married to Sarah, age 56. Still in the household were daughter Susanah, age 21, son Charles, age 19, listed as farmer's son, son Alfred, age 14 and, again, Thomas Gentry, age 80. However, this time Mr. Gentry is listed as a lodger and pauper. Two houses away listed as head of his own household is Henry Appleby, age 28, occupied as a shopkeeper and married to Harriett, age 29, with two sons, Arther Henry, age 3 and Edgar James, age 1, all born in Layer de la Hay. Joseph married Sarah Gentry-[1324] [MRIN: 428], daughter of Thomas Gentry-[1331] and Unknown, on 29 Aug 1825 in Layer DE La Haye, Essex, England, United Kingdom.1 2 (Sarah Gentry-[1324] was born about 1803 in Layer DE La Haye, Essex, England, United Kingdom 1.)
Year of marriage is a guess based on birth of son, John. |
