This William, Jr., is mentioned on the town records as one of the nine to see the town orders observed; and at one time he was required to give a bond to the town on behalf of his son-in-law Robert Coats who married his dau. Mary, and who wanted to move from Lynn to Ipswich to live. Mr. Hodgkins wrote the bond himself; and it is such a creditable piece of work, that it is still one of the treasures of the Ipswich Historical Society. Page 7.

WILLIAM1 HODGKINS (1622-1693) resided in the Little Neck area of Ipswich, Mass., for over fifty years, beginning about 1641. [Callender, pp. 1-2]

He had a share in Plum Island about 1654. It is recorded in 1666 that he built a hundred feet of posts and rails and in 1668 he built a house. In 1687 William Hodgkins, Jacob Perkins, and Matthew Perkins built twenty feet of wharf in the Cove. [Hammatt, pp. 135-139]

In 1667 he served on an inquest jury at the "Ile of Showles." He became a member of the First Church in Ipswich in 1673 and in 1676 he deposed in court that he had lived at Quartermaster Perkins's about thirty years ago. In 1677 he petitioned the town of Ipswich for a "little eyland butting against Mister paines eyland which hath a letle marsh about it that is cut everry year by one or other that hast letle or no ned of it if the town would be pleased to grant me the cutting of it I would ingage to burne all the marsh about the neck." In April 1679, "William Hodgken, sr." was in court for excessive drinking on the training day, witnessed by Seth Story and Samuell Ayres. The following September he was again fined for excessive drinking. In March 1682 Samuel Bishop in settling the estates of Thomas and Margaret Bishop brought suit against Hodgkins for debt, but the case was withdrawn. The following September, Hodgkins acknowledged judgment in fish to Samuel Bishop. In 1683 he still was having trouble "by a record of the execution levied upon him, in favor of Samuel Bishop, an attachment, as served and collected by Robert Lord and not satisfied." In 1684 when his son-in-law Robert Cotes and daughter Mary came from Lynn to reside in Ipswich, William Hodgkins furnished a bond of œ50 and submitted a signed and sealed document that they would not be burdensome to the town. [Hammatt]

The inventory of his estate lists the house and homestead at œ80, as well as stock and personal estate, among which were his gun and sword and "two Bibels & other Books." [Holman, p. 5]

His wife was GRACE2 DUTCH ( ? -c.1704), and their children were Hannah, William, Samuel (died age 1<), SAMUEL, John, Mary, Edward, Hezekiah, Thomas, Christopher, Martha, and Abigail. Grace Dutch was the daughter of OSMOND1 DUTCH (1584-1684) and GRACE PRATT. Their children, whose order of birth is unknown, were GRACE, Hester, Hezekiah, Robert, Alice, and Mary. Osmond Dutch was mentioned early as a purchaser and grantee of land in Gloucester, Mass. His residence was in the easterly part of the harbor, near the head of which was a miry place long called "Dutch's Slough." He bought a homestead in 1651. He served as selectman in 1650. His estate was œ83.10s, but apparently there was some problem as on July 21, 1685, in relation to her husband's estate, there was a "humble petition of the poor distressed widow, Grace Dutch" to the General Court.

Lois Weaver said, "I found a birth for William Hodgkins, son of William Hodgkins, St. Giles, Cripplegate, London, England, 27 Oct 1622. I didn't find a birth record for William, Sr., but the earliest film I checked started in 1689."

William married Grace Dutch-[1797] [MRIN: 625], daughter of Osmand Dutch-[1860] and Grace Pratt-[2877], before 1654.^{1 2 3} (Grace Dutch-[1797] was born in 1630 ¹, christened on 19 May 1633 ⁹ and died about 1704 ⁷.)
