Beverly Wilson Palmer, Editor Lucretia Mott Correspondence at Pomona College wrote on December 9, 1998 to Ms. Barbara Hodgkins Goon regarding her inquiry about whether Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts could be the father of Elizabeth Sumner.

"As former editor of the correspondence of U.S. Senator Charles Sumner (microfilm edition and two volumes of his selected letters), I am replying to your letter of December 1. And I fear that I have disappointing news for you. Charles sumner married only briefly in 1866, and had no children. The only sibling who had children was a sister by the name of Hastings."
