(1845); contracted for government work. Marketed Remington pistol (from 1847). Expanded into manufacture of agricultural implements (from 1856). His son Philo (1816-1889), b. Litchfield, N.Y., was associated with his father in gun-manufacturing business; president of company (1861-65); reorganized factory (1865), separating agricultural implement works from gun factory, and becoming president of E. Remington Sons, gun manufacturers (1865-89). Expanded operations to include manufacture of Remington sewing machines (from 1870) and Remington typewriters (from 1873); forced by financial conditions to sell sewing machine business (1882), typewriter plant (1886), and agricultural implement factory (1887).   Noted events in his life were: 1.
